DESCRIPTION
On a tributary (07.0837) to Carpenter Creek, which in turn flows into Woods Creek, a tributary to the Skykomish River northeast of Monroe, the Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force will partner with the Family Forest Fish Passage Program to replace three culverts currently blocking passage of coho, steelhead, and cutthroat trout with larger culverts. The primary benefit of larger culverts to salmonids is to restore access to 2.2 miles of high-quality spawning and rearing habitat in the stream. Installing larger culverts provides additional benefits to salmon habitat by allowing large woody debris, sediment, and stream substrate to move through the stream system. Engineering of the new culverts will consider the dimensions necessary to accommodate 100-year flood events. Following installation, citizen volunteers including the Sky Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited will monitor the stream reaches upstream of each culvert to assess fish presence and function of each new culvert crossing. The Task Force will replant disturbed soils at all construction sites with native vegetation to promote stream bank stability. An additional opportunity to improve fish passage is a fourth culvert upstream of the three culverts currently slated for replacement. The Task Force will contact the landowner, seek permission to evaluate the culvert, document upstream habitat condition and length, and assess feasibility of replacing the fourth culvert.
