Forterra proposes to acquire 26 acres of riparian and forested property on the N bank of the Skykomish River, about 1 mile upstream of the Baring/Index Creek Bridge in King County. The Baring N Bank property, extends from Hwy 2 to the Skykomish River, and includes 1,350 feet of river frontage, 1,000’ of tributaries, 5 acres of riparian habitat, an unnamed stream, and 5 acres of wetlands. Unprotected, this property is at risk of development, road-building and/or logging. The overall goal is to acquire and permanently protect all 26 acres for salmon recovery. As long WDFW continues to trap and haul fish above Sunset Falls (a natural fish barrier) this property provides habitat for spawning Chinook, Steelhead and odd-year Pink, and rearing Coho and Bull Trout. Forterra recently completed the Skykomish Basin Land Assessment and Mapping project, which is a foundation for prioritizing land protection, and complements King County's acquisition plans. The long-term conservation goals are to acquire significant parcels in priority reaches – including the target reach for this acquisition: Index Creek to the Foss Confluence. Two alternative priority acquisitions in this reach are Baring South Bank: 27 acres on the S bank of the Skykomish River, a half mile upstream from the Baring/Index Creek bridge, and Ranger Station Reach: 150 acres on the N bank of the river a half mile upstream of the confluence with the Beckler River. King County and the Tulalip Tribes are project partners.
