Tulalip Tribes seeks to acquire an additional 40 acres of floodplain property with up to 0.5 miles of river and slough channel adjacent to the Skykomish River near Monroe. This property is located in a key area identified by the Snohomish River Basin Salmon Conservation Plan, the Mainstem Restoration subarea group, which describes the need for restoration actions that improve habitat complexity and floodplain connection to increase rearing and spawning habitat for ESA listed Chinook and Steelhead, and for Coho. The existing training levee within the restoration planning area redirects Skykomish River flows away from the left (south) bank. This levee appears to contribute to Riley Slough being disconnected from the mainstem,  reduced floodplain connection, and reduced habitat complexity along the left bank of the river. The objectives of his project are to 1) assemble fee simple land or easements for conservation and future restoration of in-stream, floodplain, and riparian habitat, and 2) develop conceptual restoration designs. This project builds upon a previous phase (SRFB Project 18-1720) that included acquisition, data collection and identification of restoration alternatives. Approximately 6.8 acres have been purchased to date under Phase 1.Over the last 15 years Tulalip Tribes has observed dramatic reductions in coho spawning in Riley Slough tributaries, which in part is due to its isolation from the Skykomish River.
