Tulalip Tribes seeks to conserve the Snohomish River confluence by purchasing riparian and floodplain habitat necessary to enhance and restore channel and floodplain conditions on the Skykomish River at RM 1.5, near Monroe, WA. This proposed reach-scale protection and planning project involves acquisition of fee simple title or conservation easements on up to four properties, totaling approx. 23 acres. The tribes will acquire as many acres as can be afforded with proposed funding. After securing at least half the properties, along with collection of site information, the tribes will assess restoration alternatives to a) enhance floodplain connections, b) re-engage a partially abandoned side channel, and c) reconnect Riley Slough to the Skykomish River. The overall goal of the project is to increase rearing and spawning habitat for Chinook, Steelhead, Pink and Chum salmon and measurably increase Coho production. Bank protection upstream and adjacent to the project area has redirected flows in the Skykomish River, contributing to the loss of side channel connectivity and altering the lower 2000 feet of Riley Slough. Over the last 25 years dramatic reductions in Coho spawning has been observed in Riley Slough tributaries, the last time spawning was reported was in 2008. Project partners include the property owners where the floodplain connection and side channel enhancement would take place, Snohomish County, and Ducks Unlimited.
