Tulalip Tribes (TT) worked with Washington Farmland Trust to permanently protect 116 acres of forested riparian and floodplain habitat along 3 miles of the Skykomish River and Haskel Slough, across from the City of Monroe. After the property is acquired, TT enhanced over six acres of riparian habitat by removing invasive species and planting native conifers. The goal of this project was to facilitate future restoration of additional riparian areas and access/flow through Haskel Slough, and protect functioning riparian and floodplain habitat adjacent to key Chinook spawning and rearing areas that also benefit coho, chum, and pink salmon as well as steelhead trout. Washington Farmland Trust purchased the historic 260-acre Reiner Farm under a waiver of retroactivity and hopes to extinguish 18 development rights on the property in order to protect the farm from future development. Prime farming areas will continue to be used for agricultural production. Building on significant nearby salmon recovery conservation efforts, Washington Farmland Trust sold priority conservation areas to Tulalip Tribes for permanent protection. Tulalip Tribes is a logical long-term steward as we currently operate a smolt trap facility on this property, and have a growing portfolio of conservation lands managed for habitat protection, restoration, and enhancement
