DESCRIPTION
This project will address water quality for the state of Washington. The Pilchuck River tributaries of Little Pilchuck and Dubuque Creeks drain approximately 30,477 acres of urban and rural areas. These sub-basins are listed on the 303(d) list for fecal coliform and pH (both creeks), and sediment and dissolved oxygen (Little Pilchuck Creek). Current Snohomish County data shows that temperature also exceeds state standards in both sub-basins. The Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) notes that land use practices, including chemical use, animal waste, and failing septic systems likely contribute to these problems. Also noted in the TMDL are indirect but important factors contributing to poor water quality, such as loss of functioning riparian habitat and suitable instream habitat.
Adopt A Stream Foundation, Snohomish Conservation District, and Sound Salmon Solutions will address an important area of the TMDL; fostering behavior change, focusing on opportunities to improve riparian shade and waste management. AASF will provide riparian landowners with site assessments by canvassing door-to-door. Landowners will learn about simple steps they can take towards restoring habitat and water quality. Technical assistance will be offered to interested landowners to implement the recommendations.
