DESCRIPTION
Maulsby Marsh is separated from Maulsby Mudflat by West Marine View Dr. (a state highway) and BNSF lines. They are connected by a single 36 inch culvert. Restoration actions include enhancing the connection / removing the fish barrier to provide fish access to approximately 23 acres of marsh. Potential actions include bridging, increasing the size of the culvert, and providing a second connection. Restoration actions should not proceed pending ongoing toxics testing in Maulsby Marsh (Ecology working with Jeld Wen).
Maulsby Mudflat is about 225 acres and has been impacted by long term log storage. Potential restoration actions include log storage removal, creosote piling removal, wood/bark waste and contaminant clean-up, and riparian edge enhancements. Ecology's 2009 Sediment Characterization Study in Port Gardner and Lower Snohomish Estuary, Port Gardner, WA found that Maulsby Mudflats had high biological toxicity in two samples along the north and south edges of the mudflat.
Property acquisition and/or easements are required in both the mudflat and marsh, and from WSDOT and BNSF. Portions of the marsh are owned by an LLC composed of property owners of residences on the bluff above the marsh. The current culvert connection is on Foss Redevelopment Co, BNSF and WSDOT properties. Foss has not given permission for access. Jeld-Wen has approximately 200 feet of waterfront along the road north of Foss and has given permission for access to date (potential new connection to mudflat). See property ownership map in photos.
