The City of Tukwila improved habitat conditions along the lower 1,200 lineal feet of Riverton Creek and restored fish access between the creek and the Duwamish River, providing off-channel rearing habitat for salmonids, including the ESA listed Chinook salmon, steelhead, and bull trout. The project also improves access for Coho born in or returning to the creek. The property is located along the Green River Trail on the left bank of the Duwamish River at RM 6.5, all within the tidally influenced estuary and adjacent to northbound SR 599 roadway off-ramp to Tukwila International Boulevard. Restoration is across the river from Duwamish Gardens and Chinook Wind habitat projects and included: -Removing two (twin) perched culverts and flapgates; -Removing fill from the Riverton Creek and Duwamish river confluence; -Installing a new pedestrian bridge; -Constructing a structural sheet pile wall to on the left bank of Riverton Creek, to reinforce and protect the southern bridge abutment where Tukwila International Boulevard crosses the Duwamish River. -Constructing a soldier pile wall on the right bank of the creek, adjacent to the commercial parking lot; -Adding large wood to the creek channel; -Removing invasive vegetation and planting native trees and shrubs to establish a riparian buffer along along 1,200 lineal feet of each side of the creek and along 1,495 feet of the left bank of the Duwamish River by infill planting of approximately 400 lineal feet where there were openings between the river and the trail. The pedestrian bridge and an interpretive sign provide an opportunity for people to experience nature and view wildlife. This Duwamish River bank is categorized as 'critical' on the Muckleshoot Tribes Sun Aspect Map, identifying a most important need for shade, based on solar aspect.
