DESCRIPTION
King County used this grant to excavate two acres of off-channel, shallow water habitat in the Duwamish River. This transition habitat is critical to survival of young salmon migrating from the watershed headwaters, through the Howard Hanson Dam fish passage and the Green River, where they transition from freshwater to saltwater before heading to the ocean. Work included improving river bank vegetation, expanding shallow habitats and marshes and enlarging the Duwamish River estuarine transition zone habitat. King County acquired the property in 2001, removed 4,500 cubic yards of contaminated soil in 2004, completed design in 2006, and undertook another cleanup effort in 2008-2009 yielding another 17,900 cubic yards of contaminated soil. Restoration efforts were completed in 2009 and 2010 in partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers.
