DESCRIPTION
The City of Burien undertook this study to determine the feasibility of removing all or part of the seawall at Seahurst Park and restoring as much shoreline, nearshore, estuarine & stream habitat to its natural biological processes as possible. The aim of restoring the shoreline is to improve the park for aquatic life, particularly the listed Chinook salmon, while preserving the recreational uses.
The resulting Master Plan is based on a foundation of in-depth knowledge about the natural processes affecting the park and on extensive community outreach. The fundamental aspects of the plan are: Understanding Natural Processes Affecting the Park (i.e. hillside geology, coastal geology, nearshore habitat, and upland forests and streams) and Community Outreach (i.e. keep it natural/don't over develop, Improve parking and path access, address safety/crime, address shoreline stability, improve public stewardship and education)
The objectives included
* Producing an analysis that documents existing species, habitat, biological functions & recreation
* Providing alternatives for restoring the shoreline while preserving recreation
* Proposing a phased implementation plan.
Project activities included:
* Establishing baselines for species, habitats, recreation & existing construction
* Identifying desirable improvements to the various habitats
* Developing design alternatives that improve habitats & preserve recreation
* Developing capital cost estimates
* Holding public meetings to explain options & gain support
* Developing a phased construction plan
Project supporters included:
* The Army Corps of Engineers
* Central Puget Sound Watershed Forum, Nearshore Technical Co.
