The Green River is a 303(d) listed waterbody for high water temperatures which negatively impacts Chinook and steelhead populations in the lower reaches of the river. A WDOE TMDL recommends implementing riparian restoration projects along the mainstem of the river and associated tributaries. King County proposes to implement a salmon enhancement project at Flaming Geyser State Park that will restore:A)  A wetland, wetland buffer, and tributary which flows from the wetland to the Green River by installing large downed wood in these water features for hydrological and habitat benefits. In addition, native vegetation will be planted in these areas. The tributary has mostly been planted through a previous effort.B) a perennial Green River side channel by planting trees and shrubs to increase shade to the side channel and provide future food sources for salmon.This project will benefit Chinook and steelhead by moderating surface water temperatures, creating pools and rearing habitat for salmon, and increasing food supply for salmon in the tributary, wetland, and side channel. KC will install the three thermistors in August of 2022 and remove them in October of 2022. The thermistors will be calibrated and set to record data every 15 minutes. King County will provide a short technical memo documenting the actual location of the thermistors, observed temperatures, and documenting if the temperatures reached lethal levels within and downstream of the proposed restoration area.
