DESCRIPTION
Enhancing the existing right bank side channel and lower floodplain area would add an abundance of additional off-channel habitat that would benefit all salmonids, including ESAlisted species. Currently, except during large, infrequent flood events when the existing floodplain swale is active, fish can only access this floodplain area from the bottom-up, making it most likely to be used by only coho salmon and cutthroat trout. An immediate more frequent or perennial upstream connection to the existing, stable right bank side channel would likely bring more mainstem-focused species (Chinook and steelhead) into the right bank floodplain area to rear. Two existing large, high quality wetlands combined with the proposed enhanced right bank side channel, large wood and riparian plantings would make the right bank a very attractive environment for off-channel rearing by Chinook, steelhead, and coho through a wide range of flows – with up to 10 acres of aquatic habitat that currently does not exist or is marginally connected to the mainstem. More specifically, the side channel enhancement would provide Chinook salmon fry high quality off-channel habitat where they can rear longer and move downstream as larger parr that survive at a higher rate in the ocean. Providing a side channel connection on the right bank to increase the amount of off-channel habitat is also identified in the Blueprint and WRIA 9 Salmon Plan (Project A2 and MG-4, respectively).
