DESCRIPTION
Project site is owned by King County and is currently the Auburn Narrows Natural Area. Project will remove gravel road in floodway, expand notch of
previously-constructed side channel, add large wood,
and plant native vegetation. Expanded project design work is underway.
King County (KC) requests funds to complete preliminary design (Manual 18, App. D2) for the Auburn Narrows Restoration Project located in the Middle Green River. At Auburn Narrows, the base of a levee still exists which is preventing the river from accessing the floodplain. This project, when constructed, will remove portions of a remnant levee, excavate a gravel road in floodway, add large wood to the floodplain, and plant native vegetation. KC conducted a feasibility report for this project resulting in several design concepts. We would use these concepts and design tools (e.g. hydraulic modeling) to determine what suite and scale of actions are necessary to connect the river to high-quality floodplain habitat currently isolated from the river. Design alternatives that achieve this primary objective with varying costs, benefits and risks, will be evaluated in the selection of a preferred alternative, which will ultimately be pursued in the final design process. Salmon production in the Middle Green River is limited by the quantity and quality of juvenile rearing habitat. Off-channel habitats that are especially valuable for juvenile Chinook and other salmon species, are often disconnected from the mainstem river due to constraints on channel migration and flood flows. Project site is owned by KC Department of Natural Resources and Parks as the Auburn Narrows Natural Area.
