DESCRIPTION
Expand floodplain/river interaction to create and enhance
salmon rearing habitat.
King County developed the Hamakami Levee Conceptual Design Report that assessed the potential to construct a large capital floodplain reconnection project in the middle Green River that would create and enhance salmon rearing habitat. A future restoration project could:
1. remove 1,900' of an existing, failed levee, which presents a substantial constraint to river migration and wood recruitment.
2. install setback boundary protection measures further away from the rive rto protect adjacent agricultural lands and a road.
3. eradicate weeds and revegetate the restoration site with native trees and shrubs.
After careful evaluation of the five scenarios detailed in the report, Scenario 4.2 - Full Setback Scenario was identified as the Preferred Alternative. However, due to constraints and risks associated with downstream properties, the preferred alternative is not a viable option at this time. The project will be revisited in the future as downstream property acquisition becomes feasible.
