DESCRIPTION
This project was a Green Duwamish Ecosystem Restoration Project (GDERP), consistent with the WRIA 9 Salmon Conservation and Recovery Strategy. As stated in the Salmon Habitat Plan (Project LG-7), the project was a top tier priority action and is located within a priority area. The project provides much needed salmon habitat and refuge in a key reach of the Green River and the mouth of Lower Mill Creek in King County. In May 2009, the Corps received federal stimulus funds for the project, $150K for design and $2.2M for construction. SRFB funded the preliminary design in 2006 and this SRFB grant went toward construction of the project. This request was for construction funds for the Riverview Park Ecosystem Restoration project. The project, completed December 2012, provides summer rearing habitat, high flow winter refuge for Chinook and other salmon species as well as increased flood storage through creation of a new 700 foot side-channel from the main stem of the Lower Green River and across the river from the mouth of Lower Mill Creek - Auburn. The project, located in a passive use city park, includes a bioengineered channel with benches, engineered log jams at the inlet and outlet of the channel, large wood structures and spawning gravels throughout the channel, and native riparian plantings. A pedestrian bridge was constructed over the newly created channel.
