King County used project funding to expand and restore the Maury Island Aquatic Reserve and support nearshore restoration in two different process units. Specific activities included: 1) Acquiring five waterfront properties adding 6.1 acres to the Maury Island Aquatic Reserve including 536 feet of bluff backed beach with recent slide activity; 2) Removing 450 feet of creosote wood armoring of bluff backed beach from properties acquired earlier with ESRP funding; and 3) Revegetating about 0.75 acre of shoreline buffer with native vegetation. All properties have been acquired under waivers of retroactivity obtained from RCO. The reserve was established in part to protect the Quartermaster Harbor spawning grounds of Pacific herring. Removing armoring from bluff backed beaches restores natural processes that improve habitat for desirable species, including sand lance, surf smelt and Pacific herring that spawn in the area. This project closely aligns Puget Sound Partnerships vital signs with shoreline armoring, orcas, forage fish, and Chinook. This project received funding from PSAR and ESRP. ESRP funded the entire project scope of work; PSAR funded only the Prince property acquisition (0.86 acres along 0.03 miles of shoreline). This project builds upon the first and second phases of Maury Island Aquatic Reserve Armoring Removal, also supported by ESRP and PSAR funding.
