The City of Burien, in partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers, have completed design and restoration of the Seahurst Park Ph II Ecosystem Restoration project implementing the next phase of the Park Master Plan (SRFB #00-1854) and returning the northern portion of Seahurst park and shoreline to an accessible and more natural condition. The project area included 2800 feet of shoreline and extended from approximate elevation -10 feet mean lower low water (MLLW) to the lower slopes of forested bluffs. Restoration work included 1) removing shoreline armoring including seawall, rock riprap, groins, paving and fill, 2) enhancing North Creek and two smaller perennial stream mouths, marsh and riparian vegetation conditions, and 3) relocating park and educational facilities for public use in ways that do not conflict with the ecosystem restoration. Additional improvements included reconnecting feeder bluffs to the intertidal to restore sediment supply, improving intertidal habitat, and increasing suitable high intertidal spawning areas for forage fish and for juvenile salmon refuge and prey production. The construction phase began in October 2013 and was substantially completed and opened to the public on August 25, 2014. The final task originally funded with ESRP-EPA funding through this project agreement were the educational components, which will instead be paid for by the City of Burien and will not be submitted as part of the project costs. Completed educational components included the presentation of a series of professional lectures related to the project, bulkhead removal and nearshore restoration and also included the design of interpretive panels for the site, an educational video and a series of beach walks and talks further emphasizing the role of the nearshore, the Seahurst project and shoreline restoration. The Seahurst Park Shoreline Restoration Phase II project follows earlier shoreline restoration work completed in 2005 in partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and funded through the SRFB (#04-1423) along the southern shore of the park.
