DESCRIPTION
King County used this funding to acquire over 106 acres of crucial fish habitat associated with the Green/Duwamish River Ecosystem Restoration Project. Revegetation took place as well. Partners included the Army Corps of Engineers, King County, and many other jurisdictions. Prior to this project, over 700 acres of land had been protected along the Middle Green River. This generated a lot of momentum to preserve the remaining unprotected tracts. However, tremendous development pressure still remained. The parcels that were preserved in this project: a) protected the best Chinook spawning and rearing habitat in the watershed; b) expanded the ecological influence of previous acquisitions and created a critical link between large blocks of public open space; and c) protected and restored four perennial streams that provide important off-channel habitat for salmon.
