King County used this funding for the Kanaskat North acquisition project, which acquired a total of 41.19 acres of property along a remnant historic side channel to the middle Green River just below the Tacoma headworks. The property is mixed deciduous and young coniferous riparian forest/wetland complex that is hydraulically connected to the Green River. The acquisition site is near one of the highest density Chinook spawning areas in the Green River, and is located along a reach that was targeted for natural resource acquisitions under King County's Waterways 2000 Program, which resulted in acquisition of over 600 acres of land along the middle Green River. All of these areas are managed exclusively for natural resource protection, and Kanaskat North will be managed in the same way. Washington State DNR also owns extensive holdings just downstream, throughout the Green River gorge. Much of this land is undeveloped as well. The loss of habitat connectivity between features such as side channels and the mainstem was identified as a limiting factor by the Green Duwamish Ecosystem Restoration Study, a collaborative effort between King County, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and most of the watershed's cities, as well as the WRIA 9 Factors of Decline Subcommittee.
