DESCRIPTION
King County used this funding for an acquisition project with several components. The first involved acquisition of parcels that surround Big Spring Creek's headwaters in order to protect the spring source. The second and third components involved acquisition of parcels within two areas downstream of the headwaters that comprised the historic stream corridor but are now hydraulically disconnected due to the stream being diverted along a county road. One of these target areas was a riparian wetland and the other was open pasture. The stream had been routed around these properties, and functioned as a ditch. Acquisition of these second and third component parts would allow restoration of the historic stream corridor and riparian area. Big Spring Creek is a cold, spring fed tributary to Newaukum Creek, a tributary to the Green River, near Enumclaw. It provides rearing habitat for coho and other salmon species (note the Newaukum coho run is listed in SASSI as "depressed"), and has significantly lower summertime temperatures than Newaukum Creek. Restoration at this site would occur as part of the Green Duwamish Ecosystem Restoration Study, a collaborative effort between King County, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and was endorsed as an 'early action' project by the Green - Duwamish Forum in 1998. This restoration, beginning as early as 2003, could involve extensive efforts from community groups such as Trout Unlimited, the Mid-Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group, and the King Conservation District.
