DESCRIPTION

The City of Auburn contracted with King County Water and Land Resources to remove approximately 700 linear feet of the old Fenster Levee along the Green River. The completed work included: removal of the rock armor from the existing levee, removal of invasive plant species, dike removal and setback for the new levee location, installation of large woody debris (60+ logs with rootwads; these were buried and anchored in place) along the toe of the riverbank, excavation of off-channel habitat, re-establishment of flood plain connectivity, removal of excavated soil, building a large mound at the southwest corner of the site, and preparing the site for revegetation. Rehabilitation of the old side channel now provides an additional passageway for juvenile salmonids to access flood refugia and overwintering habitat in several acres of high quality, densely forested off-channel Pautzke Slough, just upstream.
