DESCRIPTION
The City of Burien partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on this project to construct the first phase of nearshore restoration along a 1,000-lineal- foot section of Seahurst Park. This shoreline restoration was recommended in a SRFB-funded Shoreline Habitat Alternatives Analysis. The project removed 1,000 lineal feet of a gabion seawall that was failing and scattering quarry spall throughout the intertidal zone along the south shore of the park. After removing the shoreline armoring, the natural beach slopes were restored with clean gravel. Additionally, riparian vegetation was installed in the upper beach and large drift wood was replaced. Since being armored in the 1970s, beach elevations in Seahurst Park had dropped three to four feet due to wave scour and the disconnection of the beach from primary sediment sources. The changes in the beach significantly degraded its functional quality as habitat for salmon and the organisms they depend on, particularly forage fish. At 169 acres and nearly one mile of shoreline, Seahurst Park can become one of the largest parcels in central Puget Sound with shoreline features that are uniformly favorable for salmonids.

NOTES
The combined project (Phase I and II) would result in almost a mile of unarmored shoreline and be one of the largest contiguous lengths of unarmored shoreline within WRIA 9.
