DESCRIPTION
King County Water and Land Resources Division (WLRD) proposes to remove a partial fish passage blockage and construct a fish passable structure where 276th Ave SE crosses over Carey Creek, a primary tributary of Issaquah Creek in Hobart, Washington. This project was awarded funding in 2021 by the BAFBRB for procurement, permitting, and final design for a bridge or fish-passable culvert. This proposal seeks funding for the management and construction of the project, scheduled to begin in 2024. The replacement stream crossing structure will reestablish unobstructed fish passage while also restoring other natural features and processes including large wood, sediment transport, and some channel adjustment, while maintaining channel stability at the road crossing. The existing twin box culvert structure is located at 276th Ave SE in unincorporated King County. WDFW has assessed it as 67% passable, with a 1.25-foot water surface drop at the outfall being the primary barrier to fish passage. Improving conditions at this crossing will restore access to three miles of high-quality aquatic and riparian habitat supporting spawning, juvenile rearing, and cool water refugia. Species benefited include Chinook salmon, coho, sockeye, steelhead, and cutthroat trout. The protected watershed upstream is minimally developed with excellent water quality, large wood accumulations, and an intact forested riparian zone.
