DESCRIPTION
Snohomish County proposes to initiate and sustain a riparian restoration effort through knotweed control and eradication within the Little Bear Creek watershed near Maltby, WA. The goal is to treat 100% of the knotweed within riparian and wetland corridors using glyphosate or imazapyr, and to prepare sites post-control for forest supplementation planting and natural recruitment of conifers and critical shrub species. Critical to this intensive effort will be continued education of landowners on knotweed best management practices to limit the spread of knotweed. Long-term goal to eradicate knotweed populations from the Little Bear Creek corridor and improve riparian habitat for the benefit of Chinook salmon-within the duration of the 10 year landowner agreement. The County will monitor the area for ten years after this grant funded work is complete to ensure establishment of the riparian community. In 2013-14 the County completed an intensive knotweed survey and assessment (PRISM 12-1276) on the Snohomish County portion of Little Bear Creek, identifying over 13 acres of knotweed largely associated with riparian corridors and presumed critical area buffers. Approximately 75% of the documented knotweed infestations occur within critical area buffers. Combined survey and detection methods determined knotweed presence/absence/extent in ~25% of riparian corridors. We currently have hold harmless agreements for knotweed control 5 adjacent parcels on Trout Creek.
