DESCRIPTION
King County Water and Land Resources Division will use this grant for a floodplain reconnection project to benefit Chinook, coho, resident and sea-run cutthroat trout, steelhead and sockeye. The restoration project goal is to reduce channel confinement and connect the floodplain to the mainstem river. The project will involve removing ~3000 feet of levee/revetment, removing approximately 180,000 cubic yards of fill in the floodplain, planting 28 acres, and constructing ~ 4875 feet of pilot channel. Restoring the Riverbend property fills an important gap in the middle Cedar River, connecting the Cavanaugh Pond and Ricardi Natural Areas and supporting 52 acres of floodplain restoration on the left bank of the Cedar River between River Mile 6.5 and 7.5. A key constraint on Chinook salmon recovery in WRIA 8 is insufficient instream rearing and refuge habitat, due to habitat simplification, loss of floodplains and side channels/off-channel rearing, and lack of large woody debris. This project addresses these constraints. The primary goal of this project is to restore the floodplain in the planning area for Chinook, coho and steelhead. More specific goals include: 1. Restore riverine processes and function in the Cedar River and its floodplain in order to improve the quality, quantity, and sustainability of salmonid spawning and rearing habitat. 2. Accommodate public use consistent with future ecological conditions at the site; and 3. Balance flood and ecological benefits and other objectives with project costs.
