DESCRIPTION
The Adopt A Stream Foundation (AASF) and partners removed a fish passage barrier on Little Bear Creek and restored 150 feet of the Little Bear Creek. This culvert was the first barrier along the 8 mile-long stream, which is known Chinook, coho, and sockeye habitat (the next barrier is 230 meters upstream and restricts access to 6 miles of habitat) . The barrier was a set of three parallel 48” diameter culverts under the decommissioned road at 132nd Avenue NE in Woodinville, WA. The existing culverts were rapidly deteriorating; therefore, this project eliminated the threat of the culverts becoming a complete barrier to salmon migration. In addition to improving access to upstream habitat, AASF improved habitat near the old culvert by adding large woody debris structures to the channel and planting native riparian trees and shrubs. The installed wood structures benefit salmon by diversifying the stream channel, sorting gravel and creating scour pools, creating rearing habitat for juvenile fish, and reducing fine sediment input to the stream caused by bank erosion. These pools even create appropriate areas for adult salmon to build redds, increasing the amount of spawning habitat in Little Bear Creek. Riparian plantings also benefit the stream communities. As the riparian plants grow, they will reduce water temperatures by shading the creek, reduce erosion through root development, and create terrestrial insect and bird habitat.

NOTES
Permits obtained. Was funded, but Woodinville unable to reach agreement with private landowner so funding reallocated to 134th Ave NE culvert. However there is a new, willing property owner, so the feasibility has greatly increased.

Update 6/22/2010: Adopt A Stream has design plans completed for removal of 132nd culvert. They currently have a grant application in for funding.
