The Clearwater School and Commons is privately owned in the middle reach of North Creek between 208th St SE (Thrashers Corner) and 164th St SE (City of Mill Creek). Here, riparian conditions have been degraded historically by the loss of natural and mature riparian cover, streambank erosion, lawn cultivation, invasive plants (especially knotweed), and streambank armoring. Habitat surveys documented that stream habitat complexity was poor due to the low pool quantity and quality and low levels of large woody debris (LWD). Along 1500 lineal feet of North Creek, Snohomish County completed the following 1) removed riprap and a footbridge; 2) stabilized eroding streambanks; 3) installed large woody debris (LWD) to a level comparable to natural wood load; 4) restored riparian vegetation and functions by removing invasive species and nonnative upland fill material, 5) planted native trees and shrubs; and 6) engaged local residents and students in the restoration project and in ongoing project stewardship. The goal of the project was to improve spawning and rearing habitat for ESA listed Chinook, coho, and sockeye salmon. This work builds on other successful habitat restoration within the North Creek subbasin implemented by Snohomish County, including restoring a section of North Creek downstream of this site at Twin Creeks. This project was proposed as part of the WRIA 8 Salmon Recovery Plan and included on the WRIA 8 priority “3-Year List.”
