Seattle Parks and Recreation Department undertook the Rainier Beach Lake Park Shoreline Restoration project to increase the amount and quality of littoral habitat in southern Lake Washington along the critical juvenile Chinook salmon migratory corridor between the Cedar River and Puget Sound. The project restored 700 feet of shoreline by removing bank armoring, regrading the bank, removing in-water debris, and improving riparian conditions, thus converting a defunct marina to prime shallow water habitat. The project was designed to primarily benefit juvenile Chinook, which have been documented using the relatively natural portions of the site. These fish depend on Lake Washington for both rearing and migration. However, extensive modifications of the shoreline from bank armoring, overwater structures, and removal of riparian vegetation have severely restricted the quantity and quality of shallow water areas that juveniles rely upon for rearing and refuge. The WRIA 8 Technical Committee's Ecosystem Diagnosis and Treatment modeling has found that restoration in the southern portion of Lake Washington, as well as the lower Cedar River, has the largest beneficial effect on Cedar River Chinook population numbers of any area in the WRIA 8 watershed. The Rainier Beach project complements several other efforts by the City of Seattle to expand rearing habitat in southern Lake Washington.
