DESCRIPTION
King County used this funding to acquire 15.9 acres of habitat along the Cedar River mainstem between approximately RM 7.2 & 7.4. The acquisition includes riparian forested floodplain, 1,700 feet of river frontage along both banks, and the mouth and lower reaches of a spring-fed tributary. This project built on other significant conservation efforts including buyout of two homes and partial floodplain restoration in 1997 and the donation of 7 acres of adjacent floodplain in 1999. The Cedar River supports one of the few known native runs of Chinook in WRIA 8 and adds to the base of protected habitat area for coho, steelhead, sockeye, resident trout and wildlife. The Cedar River Council supported this project and ranked it among its highest priorities in 1998. The outcome of this project was to permanently protect additional valuable habitat in this reach thus creating a significantly sized core habitat for salmonids in the lower Cedar River. The reach approach acknowledges that salmonid habitat and its protection nearly always requires working at a larger geographic scale than that of a single parcel or non-contiguous parcels. The strategy is to focus on the overall reach and achieve protection of the reach a few parcels at a time.
