DESCRIPTION
King County used this funding to acquire 2.56 acres of habitat along the lower Cedar River. Chinook surveys conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 documented Chinook redds throughout this reach. A 75-acre protected area exists opposite the target parcels and through additional land acquisition, this project helped further the goal of protecting habitat-forming processes. The Cedar River supports the only documented run of native Chinook in the WRIA. In addition, the Cedar provides habitat for sockeye, coho, steelhead, and resident trout. This site was selected by the Cedar River Council (CRC), a local group whose mission includes salmon habitat protection. A subcommittee of the CRC ranked this as the #1 reach for the year 2000 prioritization process. This project took a reach approach to continue acquisition of high value salmonid habitat along the lower Cedar River mainstem, a "core" area of WRIA 8 as identified by the WRIA 8 Technical Committee. The reach approach acknowledged that protection of salmonid habitat is most effective in the long run at a geographic scale larger than that of a single parcel or non-contiguous parcels. The strategy was to focus on the overall reach and achieve protection of the reach a few parcels at a time.
