DESCRIPTION
The City of Fife will design a fish-friendly passage structure to replace the undersized twin culverts in the Wapato creek. The culverts are located at the intersection of 20th Street E and Goldau Road E, which is adjacent to several commercial properties. The culvert replacement will improve the fish passage corridor and improve access to spawning and rearing habitat further upstream for Chinook, Sockeye, Pink, Chum fish-species that are critical to the Southern Residents Killer Whales diet. The project will design for the removal of twin 48-inch concrete culverts and replacement with a fish-friendly structure. The City of Fife and the Port of Tacoma have made significant investments in multiple projects along the Wapato creek in an effort to restore foraging and spawning salmon habitat. The City of Fife has created regulations that require private investments of adjoining properties as conditions of development. These investments from developer fees have helped fund fish passage improvement projects. The City of Fife remains committed to ensuring sensitive salmon passages and habitat are protected and preserved through ongoing public/private partnerships and responsible development. The Puyallup Tribe of Indians and the Port of Tacoma are important partners in providing project guidance, collaboration and funding toward improving fish passage throughout Fife's watersheds.
