DESCRIPTION
SPSSEG, alongside project partners including Pierce Conservation District, Pierce County Surface Water Management, and Puyallup Tribe of Indians, completed this project in 2020. The South Prairie Creek Preserve Floodplain Restoration project was completed to restore habitat for fish and wildlife in the South Prairie Creek valley. Project actions will restore critical habitat functionality, thermal diversity, hydrologic stability, and geomorphic structure to support adult to juvenile out-migrant survival and productivity for spawning, rearing, foraging, migrating, and overwintering life history stages in South Prairie Creek for fall Chinook, Steelhead, Coho, Chum, Pink, and Cutthroat and Bull Trout. The phase 1 actions completed under this grant agreement include: 1. Placement of 3 channel spanning log jams and 12 mid channel log structures in the mainstem channel of South Prairie Creek. 2. Installation of 15 floodplain wood structures. 3. Demolition of a 80 foot creosote bridge crossing on the main channel of South Prairie Creek and installation of a 36-foot steel bridge crossing over Silver Springs Creek 4. Demolition of 9 remnant dairy buildings. 5. Planting of 18 acres. Due to significant cost share and leverage of other funds this project was able to accomplish more work than proposed to install additional log structures. Project actions are expected to improve main channel habitat complexity and reduce mean substrate size in South Prairie Creek to increase spawning potential and capacity for adult life stages. The project will alleviate velocity barriers to upstream migration during high flows to increase spatial distribution of fish within the watershed. Improved rearing conditions may yield greater life-history diversity by sustaining river-type life history strategies for Chinook, Steelhead, Coho, Cutthroat and foraging Bull Trout.
