This project will re-route a highly modified and degraded 1800lf section of Boise Creek (RM 3.7-4.2) to an historic channel against the 2nd generation mature forested steep hillside at the Enumclaw Golf Course; providing immediate instream habitat and water quality improvements for chinook and steelhead. The historic channel is located outside the golf course field of play; removing routine golfer disturbances to spawning salmon (particularly chinook) and allowing for establishment of needed riparian vegetation along the creek (restoring riparian habitat function and providing further thermal protection). Large woody material added to the channel along with natural boulders will provide energy dissipation and increase habitat complexity and channel roughness, diversifying habitats available to fish. A 475 lf side channel incorporated in the design provides immediate channel complexity, off channel habitat, and refuge. Concurrent daylighting of Chappel springs will provide important off-channel habitat and high flow refuge to the stream system. Incorporation of an earthen embankment along the golf course side of the restored channel will provide an appropriately sized routine floodplain for natural geomorphic processes to develop while maintaining viability of the golf course and creating further separation from golf course activities; ultimately ensuring long-term viability of the ecological, habitat, water quality, and salmonid spawning improvements of this project.
