DESCRIPTION
White River Levee (Countyline) Construction Project setback the levee at the King-Pierce County border along the left bank of the White River at approximately river mile 5.2.  Completed in 2017 with the goal to reconnect the White River to its historic floodplain and restore riverine processes and functions. 121 acres of floodplain have been reconnected with the River. The priority species supported by these habitats are Endangered Species Act listed anadromous fish including White River spring Chinook, steelhead, and bull trout, as well as coho, pink, and chum salmon and cutthroat trout. The project entails the construction of 6,000 lineal feet of new setback levee along the landward edge of a forested buffer to protect existing properties and structures. Construction of 5,780 lineal feet of bio-engineered bank revetment along the existing wetland edge will protect existing properties and structures. Engineered log structures will be installed in the existing wetland complex. Removal of approximately 4,500 lineal feet of levee and bank armoring will take place and forested riparian buffer (approximately 18 acres) adjacent to the wetland will be restored. Per King County's request, the project agreement was amended in 2011 to change the project type from acquisition and restoration to acquisition and planning. King County will complete acquisition of three parcels (Ancich, Fairweather, and BSNF) and 100% design plans for the levee setback project.
