DESCRIPTION
Install inclined floor screen structure on flume at Electron Dam diversion to reduce juvenile mortality during out migration.
Outlet of Flume located at Electron Forebay.
Diversion, inadequate screening. Approximately 50% of downstream migrant juveniles enter the diversion. Approx. 20% of those are trapped and returned to the river. The remaining smolts suffer 100% mortality in the powerhouse.
Majority of smolts migrating down the flume to the forebay are subsequently ground up by the turbines. There is up to 80% mortality.
Engineer and construct an incline screen structure to increase overall juvenile salmonid survival during out migration from the Upper Puyallup River.
EDT modeling showed that improvement of the Electron Dam diversion screen is the top ranked action for Puyallup Chinook.
Increase out migrating juvenile salmonid survival that will increase overall adult returns will lead to establishing salmonids in a habitat that has been devoid of salmon for 96 years. ESA listed Chinook and Char will benefit immensely from the project. Without the project reintroduction of salmonids in the Upper Puyallup will be daunting.
Numerous screening projects have been implemented from Washington to California with great results. A similar screen works well in the
White River Basin. Permitting will go smoothly. Puget Sound Energy's willingness to do the project is unknown.
