DESCRIPTION
Construct a setback levee on the north side of the Puyallup River between River mile 2.9 and 3.1 to improve fish habitat and increase flood protection. Environmental benefits of the setback levees include increased channel complexity, more natural sediment conveyance and storage process, and enhancement of off-channel habitats. The project will improve connectivity of the river to wetlands and historical meander channels. There will be short-term adverse impacts to riparian vegetation and silt bench habitat.
Recovery Plan Chapter : WRIA 10/12 Salmon Habitat Protection and Restoration Strategy Chapter 5.
Goal: Improve floodplain connectivity
Environmental benefits of the setback levees include increased channel complexity, more natural sediment conveyance and storage process, and enhancement of off-channel habitats. The project will improve connectivity of the river to wetlands and historical meander channels. There will be short-term adverse impacts to riparian vegetation and silt bench habitat. Threatened species include Chinook salmon, steelhead and bull trout.
