The objective of the project is to preserve, protect & enhance riverine floodplain property that has high potential for functioning as good salmon habitat. The proposed project means to accomplish this by way of acquisition of floodplain land by fee-simple purchase. This will ensure preservation & allow for future & ongoing enhancements to the site. The site is located along the right bank of the Carbon River at river mile 0.8, and lies at the northern limits of the City of Orting. The 66 acre site includes partial floodplain areas of 7 separate tax title parcels in which 2 different individuals have respective private ownership. Land use of the subject site include agricultural farm land & tree growing plantations. The landowners are currently in discussions/negotiations with a land developer for a prospective sale of the property. This may likely result in significant change to current land use. The subject site is located along one of the most productive mainstem Carbon River spawning habitat areas in the entire Puyallup River watershed. Benefits with the acquisition of the site will eventually allow natural river processes to occur in the river channel floodway & its floodplain fringe area, thereby significantly increasing available habitat area for use of both adult & juvenile salmonids. Anticipated start date for the project is 3/99 with anticipated completion in 7/99.
