DESCRIPTION
In 1997 the Pierce Conservation District organized a group of technical experts in the Puyallup River Watershed to evaluate potential fish habitat enhancement projects on Champion Pacific Timberlands. The team was made up of representatives from the United States Fish & Wildlife Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, Pierce Conservation District, Puyallup Tribe of Indians, Champion Pacific Timberlands, in South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group. Eleven potential sites were looked at and evaluated. In 1998, five projects were implemented with two planned for 1999 which included the 21 Road abandonment. The evaluation team agreed the 21 Road Abandonment is a high priority project. Champion 21 road along a Neisson creek will be decommissioned. The 9,500 feet of road currently crosses the stream in 4 places and erosion problems persist along the majority of its length. The project will remove all road crossing structures (2cmp's and 2 log culverts). The road grade will be resloped to match natural conditions and then replanted.
