DESCRIPTION
This project restored a 12.85-acre site along the mainstem of South Prairie Creek at RM 3.7 (west of South Prairie, WA), including the lower 1600 feet of an important cold-water tributary, South Silver Springs, which flows through the site. The project removed floodplain fill and a concrete weir on South Silver Springs; constructed 800 feet of new stream channel and 370 feet of off channel alcoves on South Silver Springs in the vicinity of where the fill was removed; controlled invasive vegetation; placed wood throughout the new South Silver Springs channel and in South Prairie Creek for use by rearing juvenile and adult salmon spawners; removed approximately 300' of riprap along South Prairie Creek; and revegetated the site. The project primarily benefits juvenile salmonids by providing enhanced rearing habitat, high-flow refuge, and improved connectivity between the tributary and mainstem creek. Adult salmon also benefit by the enhancement of some spawning areas in the tributary and placement of wood into the mainstem for cover. Large numbers of juvenile coho have been seen entering South Silver Springs within the first few months following construction. Pink, coho and chum salmon adults have already spawned in the new channel as documented by tribal surveys. No future activities are expected at this site except for maintenance of plants. Once a native forest has matured it should provide long term natural maintenance.
