DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this project is to construct a fish bypass channel that will provide access to approximately six miles of upstream habitat. The Morey Creek Fish Pond Dam is located on McChord Air force Base and was built in the 1970s to provide recreational fishing opportunities for members of the Armed Services. The dam is a barrier to fish passage and prevents any upstream migration of Coho and anadromous cutthroat trout into Morey Creek and associated wetlands. The project location is upstream of the confluence of Morey Creek and Clover Creek. The project constructioned of 400 feet of new stream channel as a fish bypass around the Morey Pond Dam. The bypass channel design is meant to emulate as closely as possible a natural stream system. Design components include woody debris, stream bed boulders and gravel, refuge areas and a slope in character with streams in this region. The Clover and Morey Creek systems historically supported populations of anadromous and resident fish, including Coho and Cutthroat trout. Coho currently are not able to access Morey Creek because of the barrier at the Morey Pond Dam.
