The Lower Boise Channel Restoration Project was designed and constructed to create an alluvial fan floodplain. Large woody debris provide roughness so that Boise Creek can scour pools, form riffles, build terraces, and actively migrate and provide spawning, rearing and refuge habitat for Chinook, pink, coho, and chum salmon and other fish and wildlife species. Project construction included the removal of creosote piles from an abandoned railroad trestle. A comprehensive cleanup of contaminated soil and groundwater was performed, resulting in the complete restoration of the site to background environmental conditions. Project construction included the excavation of 9,000 cubic yards of soil to create a new 2 acre floodplain with 1,100 linear feet of channel, including 600 linear feet of new channel and 500 linear feet of reconstructed historic channel. Helicopters were used to salvage large woody debris from behind the Mud Mountain Dam. Over 150 pieces of LWD, including 12 key pieces over 75ft long, were transported from the dam to the project site and placed in the new floodplain and channels. Planting consisted of installing 5,845 bare-roots, 1055 1-gal native plants and over 9,750 live stake willows. In the winter of 2010 approximately 200 hatchery chum carcasses were scattered to fertilize the project site.
