DESCRIPTION
The Lower Boise Creek Channel Restoration Project constructed 2 acres of new floodplain and 580 linear feet of new channel, and enhanced the pre-existing 440 linear foot channel with a total of six channel-spanning logjams. Over 120 pieces of LWD were installed in the created floodplain and channel, and 8,425 plants were installed to establish a native plant community. The new channel has a meandering pattern, with no levees or revetments anywhere along its length, and it restored the historic channel gradient and habitat. The new channel was designed to contain bankfull flows, but also to allow out-of-channel flows and floodplain inundation during flood events. The project also removed approximately 800 tons of contaminated railroad trestle debris including piling and soil. The Lower Boise Channel Restoration Project was designed and constructed to create an alluvial fan floodplain on this right-bank tributary to the White River near river mile 23.3. Large woody debris provide roughness so that Boise Creek can scour pools, form riffles, build terraces, and actively migrate and provide spawning, rearing and refuge habitat for Chinook, pink, coho, and chum salmon and other fish and wildlife species. Project construction included the removal of creosote piles from an abandoned railroad trestle.
