DESCRIPTION
Forterra (dba Cascade Land Conservancy) used this grant to complete the South Prairie Creek Action Plan: Salmon Habitat Protection. South Prairie Creek is the primary tributary to the Carbon River in Pierce County, WA. The plan identifies and prioritizes the highest quality parcels (15 in number) along the creek based on the best available science and local knowledge and develops a priority habitat protection list. Using GIS and existing studies (such as those by Washingtonians for Wildlife Conservation (WWC), Trust for Public Lands (TPL), the Salmon and Steelhead Habitat Inventory and Assessment Program (SSHIAP), and Ecosystem Diagnosis and Treatment analysis (EDT)), properties were ranked based on quality of existing habitat and restoration opportunity. Preservation of quality salmon habitat along South Prairie Creek will address the primary fish recovery, habitat protection, and geographic objectives outlined in the WRIA 10/12 Salmon Recovery Strategy.
South Prairie Creek is the backbone of natural salmonid production in the Lower Carbon River subbasin and Puyallup Watershed. The creek produces nearly half of all the wild steelhead in the Puyallup River system, has the only significant run of pink salmon, and enjoys healthy returns of Chinook, coho and chum salmon and sea-run cutthroat trout.
