DESCRIPTION
The Pierce County Conservation District used this grant to restore fish passage at three road crossings and to decommission nearly 4 miles of forest service road in the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest near Greenwater, WA. The 1999 PCCD culvert survey identified the FS 7020 culvert at Slide Creek and the FS 7021 culverts at Straight Creek and Burns Creek to be the highest priority fish passage barriers in the Greenwater River Watershed. The culverts were prioritized using WDFW's priority indexing methology. The outlet of the Slide Creek culvert was perched ~ 8 ft above a shallow pool with heavily eroded approach fills on each side. The Straight Creek culvert was plugged during a 1995 flood event & cut a new channel through the adjacent road fill. The new incised channel was a barrier to all fish life-stages. The Burns Creek culvert was still intact, but was undersized for the amount of flow and debris produced and too steep to allow fish passage. This project involved removing all three culverts and associated fill material. The stream banks were revegetated with weed free mulch, red alder saplings, and conifer saplings. This project resulted in improved passage of salmonids at all life-stages and opened 2.5 miles of spawning and rearing habitat while eliminating the risk of road/culvert failure and degradation to downstream habitat. Both Chinook & native char (bull trout and Dolly Varden) are present in the mainstem Greenwater River adjacent to confluences of the streams mentioned above and are listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.
