DESCRIPTION
Pierce County Conservation District used this funding to remove a concrete dam built on private property (circa 1939) that was a fish passage barrier on Clover Creek, 100m upstream from Gravelly Lake Drive in Lakewood, WA. The dam was decorative in nature and was used to create a pond with a decorative water wheel. The spillway for the dam was a velocity barrier at some flows and had to be monitored frequently to insure fish passage. Maintenance was difficult as the site was on private property behind a locked gate. After removal of the dam and two assoicate artificial islands, three wiers were constructed to be maintenance free and allow unimpeded fish passage at all flow levels. This was the last fish passage issue requiring attention on the mainstem of Clover Creek, and insured access for coho salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat trout in the creek to nearly 7 miles of habitat above the dam. The streambank was revegetated with native plants and trees to provide shade and prevent erosion. Project partners included the City of Lakewood (providing a 20% funding match), South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group, and Puyallup Tribe.
