DESCRIPTION
The Nisqually Land Trust permanently protected 89.7 acres in the Lower Ohop Valley and 0.8 miles of Ohop Creek shoreline through fee acquisition of two properties. The protected lands are within the Ohop Creek floodplain and on steep slopes that contain seeps and springs that feed into Ohop Creek. While significant portions of these properties contain year-round ponded areas, drier areas in the valley were used as hay fields and pasture by the previous owners. Nearby permanently protected lands include 68 acres owned by the Nisqually Indian Tribe and 400 acres owned by the Land Trust. All of these properties are within the Lower Ohop Creek Restoration Project area and the properties acquired as a part of this project will be included in a future phase of the restoration project. So far, the Lower Ohop Creek Restoration Project has restored a meandering alignment to 2.4 miles of Ohop Creek, enhanced 0.6 miles of the previously ditched creek channel as side-channel habitat, and planted native trees and shrubs on 210 acres in the floodplain and adjacent uplands. As a part of this project, the Land Trust partnered with the South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group and the Nisqually Indian Tribe on stewardship activities in the Lower Ohop Creek Restoration Project phases 1-3 areas. These activities included planting additional native trees and shrubs in the creek and side-channel buffers with a focus of increasing shade and vertical structure along the creek-edge. Other stewardship activities included maintenance of these plantings with treatments to control browse and weed competition on the planted seedlings and removal of previously installed plastic plant protectors throughout the project site. The Lower Ohop Creek Protection and Restoration Project benefits Chinook, Chum, Coho, Pinks, Steelhead, and Cutthroat.
