The Nisqually Land Trust acquired for permanent protection four properties along the south shoreline of the Wilcox Reach of the Nisqually River in Thurston County. These properties include 0.4 miles of river shoreline, 0.25 miles of Toboton Creek, and 0.11 miles of river side-channel along a stretch of the river where the river channel is migrating to the south, rapidly eroding the shoreline of these properties. Land Trust acquisition of these properties is allowing this natural river process to continue at this location. Of the 41 acres included in the original parcel boundaries, approximately 15 acres are currently within the active channel area and 26 are in the adjacent floodplain. This project included demolition of residential structures and infrastructure on two of the properties and residential structures and infrastructure were removed from the other two properties prior to Land Trust acquisition. In addition, initial riparian plantings to are underway on the properties under separate funding to increase forest cover in the areas previously cleared for residential and recreational uses. Both the Nisqually Chinook Salmon Recovery Plan and the Nisqually Steelhead Trout Recovery Plan rate this reach of the Nisqually River as highest priority for protection of habitat. This stretch of the Nisqually River is utilized by all Nisqually River salmonid populations.
