DESCRIPTION
Permanent protection of 240 acres of undeveloped, mature (80+ year old) Douglas fir forest, including .95 miles of Powell Creek and its tributary Elbow Lake Creek, 40 acres of riparian habitat, and 12 acres of wetland, through fee acquisition. The property is in the south half of Township 16, Range 03E, Section 28. It is just upstream of the lower Powell Creek wetland and is accessed from Peissner Road.  Powell Creek is a tributary to the Nisqually River and the confluence is approximately 1.5 miles downstream from the property. The creeks and riparian zones on the property are in good condition and naturally functioning. These creeks are particularly important for Nisqually late-run coho and steelhead spawning and rearing, but are also utilized by Chinook, chum and cutthroat. Juvenile salmon have been observed by Nisqually Indian Tribe Natural Resources and WDFW staff upstream of the property on Powell Creek and upstream of the partial barriers downstream of the property on Elbow Lake Creek. The property is scheduled for clearcut timber harvest in 2020-2021. Protection of this property will eliminate the possibility of harvest impacts to in-stream, riparian and wetland habitats, including siltation due to erosion and changes in the timing and quantity of streamflow. This project builds on habitat protection and fish passage projects that have been completed or that are in-progress downstream of the proposed acquisition.
