DESCRIPTION
The Nisqually River and its tributaries provide important spawning and rearing reaches for Chinook, Coho, Pink, and Chum salmon; as well as Steelhead trout. At the start of this grant, knotweed infested the upper basin's riparian areas. The project reduced knotweed presence in the basin, and to set it on the trajectory towards manageable maintenance in order to protect salmonid habitat. The project succeeded in this goal. Due to planting delays the cost were reduced to $10,349. Pierce Conservation District inventoried and eradicated invasive knotweed species from the Nisqually River and its tributaries. The plan continued efforts in the Upper Nisqually Basin controlling the most upstream occurrences removing sources of re-infestation and reestablishing native riparian vegetation. During 2014, we treated and surveyed 284 acres across 63 parcels. During 2015, we treated and surveyed 217 acres across 44 parcels. During 2016, we treated and surveyed 447 acres across 59 parcels. During 2017, we treated and surveyed 502 acres across 61 parcels. Between 2014 and 2017, we revegetated 30 acres with native riparian plants. Amendment #2 Time Extension in December 2016 extended the grant to March 15, 2018. Due to WCC staffing issues, the final planting did not occur before 3/31/18. Pierce Conservation District funds paid to complete the final planting. The planting commenced on March 19, 2018, of the remaining 10 acres, but completed after 3/31/18.
