DESCRIPTION
In 2009 the Nisqually Refuge removed their river dikes to give the river the freedom to migrate in this highly active delta fan. Having both sides of the river levee removed at the same time would let the river decide which area to move into, not determined by sequencing of restoration projects. With the refuge project completed, there was a lot of the momentum to completely finish the largest Puget Sound estuary restoration project. This portion of the restoration within the Red Salmon Slough area included earth removal of approximately 7,100 feet of levee and removal of a collapsed bridge, reconnecting severed tidal channels. Approximately 1.0-acre of project disturbance area (formerly a large Himalayan blackberry infestation) was replanted with native riparian vegetation.
