Nisqually Land Trust acquired four parcels along the Thurston County side of the Nisqually River mainstem in the Whitewater Reach. These properties are adjacent to other conservation lands owned and managed by the Land Trust and the City of Yelm. The goal of this project is to protect naturally functioning habitat-forming processes; existing high-priority salmon and trout rearing habitats; and an important transport corridor that is used by all salmonid species in the Nisqually River. The parcels the Land Trust acquired total 43.2 acres, including 13.1 acres of riparian habitat, 8 acres of forested wetlands, and 4,280 linear feet of river shoreline. As a part of the project, all structures have been removed from and infrastructure decommissioned on one of the properties. All of the other properties are undeveloped. There were three amendments to this project agreement including: a time extension to provide sufficient time for acquisition of all four properties and demolition of structures on one of properties, a scope change to include demolition of structures and decommissioning of septic and water infrastructure on one of the properties, and two amendments that addressed a cost increase.
