DESCRIPTION
This project included the acquisition of 9 acres adjacent to the Nisqually Land Trust's 452-acre Powell Creek Preserve, along Powell Creek, a small but critical tributary stream and off-channel wetland to the mainstem Nisqually River. This stream provides spawning habitat for Chinook salmon and spawning and rearing habitat for coho, pink salmon, and steelhead and cutthroat trout. This acquisition was one of the last essential acquisitions for bringing the entire Powell Creek wetland complex into conservation ownership and management. Powell Creek enters the Nisqually River near rivermile 32, and this property is roughly 2.5 miles up Powell Creek. The 9-acre acquisition included wetland and riparian buffer to the homestead adjacent to the site. Appraisal came in significantly higher than expected which almost doubled the cost of the project.
